Portsmouth Referees' Association

Fitness Referee Training Update - June 26th

This week's fitness session was the best yet with a good workout enjoyed by a season record of 10 people which included Lucy May for the first time this summer.

Two laps around the pitch with Geoff Skillen setting the pace warmed everyone up. Mike Misselbrook ran some warming-up exercises to get all the muscles in the body ready for what was to come while Ash Potter gave everyone a thrilling time when he started letting them know about the trains that passed us by during the exercises and the morning for that matter.

Ash, Ken and Andrew stretch before the main exercise of the morning

With a fitness test still looming for some referees Dean decided we try the dreaded 12 minute run before finishing up with some medium-intensity running with recovery walk exercises.

Lucy and Phillip Hodgson left slightly early leaving the football match to a 4 v 4 game. Team Potter was made up by captain Ash, Craig Robson, Ken Brown and Andrew Misselbrook. Team Treleaven boasted skipper Dean, Mike Desborough, Geoff Skillen and Mike Misselbrook. However, there was not much boasting after match from Dean & Co after their team were soundly beaten by Ash's hardworking unit and courtesy of a Misselbrook Jnr hat-trick.

Andrew had given his side a 1-0 lead early before captain Dean tried his hand at playing Robert Green. Misselbrook's attempted pass to Robson was over-weighted and as the ball rolled gently towards Dean to trap with his foot the ball squeaked underneath to roll across the line. Retrieving the ball quickly and keen to make up for his mistake Dean took the ball upfield before attempting a pass to a team mate. However, Misselbrook Jnr intercepted and cooly struck home from long distance in David Villaesqe style to punish the goalkeeper and complete his hat-trick. Dean moved outfield, but the decision was too late and his team fell to a 3-0 defeat. Skipper Treleaven described the goalkeeping errors as his "worst moments of his prestigious footballing career".

The second game between Skillen FC and Brown Wanderers was a tighter affair and decided by three goals in quick succession. Skillen FC made up by Geoff, Craig, Desborough and Misselbrook Snr took the lead after a wayward shot from Misselbrook Snr was diverted home by Desborough. Brown Wanderers (Ken, Dean, Ash and Misselbrook Jnr) responded immediately through Treleaven (eager to make up for his mistakes in the first game) and cooly finished when set up by captain Ken. However, Skillen FC had the last laugh when Robson put through his captain to slot past keeper Ken to seal a 2-1 victory.
